For My Father, James Saunders

For My Father, James Saunders
(who passed before I could remember him)

one day
like a mighty oak tree

with your roots stretching
throughout the house
of my ego’s union with eternity

(where today will be tomorrow was yesterday
&        all that connects me to you is a seed)

i’ll stand tall before thee
reciting the leaves of poetry
that adorn me

now, as i try
to recall you.
